Schiffer Collaborative School Principal JOB GOAL: Coordinate and supervise learning opportunities for students at the John C.
Schiffer Collaborative School; ensure student success in non-traditional learning pathways.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and maintain a community-based internship program.
Develop 1:1 mentoring relationships between students and community leaders and experts.
Oversee dual enrollment in collaboration with Sheridan College; track student performance within dual enrollment classes; provide weekly support for students in dual enrollment classes.
Facilitate completion of Student Success Plans for all Schiffer students; facilitate the creation of student electronic portfolios.
Coordinate student career explorations related to internships and mentorships.
Develop and maintain a process for culminating student presentations/defense of learning in coordination with Student Success Plans.
The Discovery Program was written in 1990 by Eric Larsen, an alternative high school teacher in Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The program was designed to teach social-emotional skills to students struggling with academic, attendance, and attitude problems.
The curriculum includes sophisticated social skills, behavior management strategies, culture development, and experiential activities.
The objectives of the program are threefold: 1.
To develop a strong sense of community and a support system for all students 2.
To teach, practice, and give feedback on specific positive social skills 3.
To reinforce the culture of the classroom/school and ensure that all students realize what is expected of them and what they can expect from the staff The Discovery Program is a concrete, skill-based curriculum that has the power to create positive change in students.
Through Discovery, students learn and master the positive social-emotional skills necessary to be successful in school and in life.
It is designed to improve student achievement.
The Discovery Program works especially well for students considered at risk.
The program enhances the academic and personal accomplishments of those currently in traditional classes.
Discovery helps school districts solve problems with apathy, violence, academic achievement, and attendance.
Unit 1: Effective Group Skills And Team Building - Students are taught the importance of effective groups and begin practicing essential group skills.
The unit emphasizes cooperation, synergy, appropriate risk-taking, clear communication, and positive mental attitudes.
Unit 2: Anger Management - This unit is a cognitive approach to managing anger and frustration.
Students are taught skills to help them re-frame anger and use it as a positive force in their lives as opposed to a destructive force.
The model helps students identify their own triggers and cues to anger, and helps them develop alternative coping strategies.
